Oscar Watch: 127 Hours

"127 Hours"
Directed by Danny Boyle
Starring: James Franco

For this year's Oscar run, here's the first movie I saw. Of course, nominations aren't out yet, but this is probably going to be a key player for certain categories. My reviews this year will hopefully be short and straight to the point.

"127 Hours" is a well-made film that Roger Ebert aptly stated is an "exercise in conquering the unfilmable." Yet it works, with excellent cinematography, acting, and pacing. The majority of the movie takes place in one single unmoving locale, yet the cinematography helps add to the suspense and loneliness felt by the main character. Franco's acting had to carry the movie, and that it did; the pain and desperation he felt was almost palpable. And the pacing of the movie actually makes the movie feel fast. As I read somewhere, this is like an action movie where no one moves. Fascinating, and definitely should be a contender for cinematography, editing, and best actor.
